Boxing vs MMA – Which is more dangerous?

Boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) are both intense combat sports that require a high level of skill and physical fitness. However, when it comes to the safety of the fighters, opinions are divided on which sport is more dangerous. So.. Boxing vs MMA – Which is more dangerous?

While some argue that MMA is more hazardous, many experts believe that boxing is more dangerous than MMA for several reasons.

One of the main reasons why boxing is considered more dangerous than MMA is the high number of knockdowns in the sport. In boxing, a fighter can be knocked down multiple times in a single match, and this increases the risk of head injuries and brain damage. The bigger gloves used in boxing also contribute to this risk, as they allow fighters to deliver more powerful punches, which can cause more damage to the brain.

Another factor that makes boxing more dangerous than MMA is the amount of punches to the brain that boxers are exposed to in fights and in training. Boxers are required to engage in sparring and training sessions that involve a high number of punches to the head, which can lead to cumulative brain damage over time. This is not the case in MMA, where fighters are not exposed to the same level of head trauma as boxers.

While MMA also has its fair share of injuries, such as broken bones, cuts, and bruises, the risk of head injuries is considered lower in MMA than in boxing. This is because MMA fighters are able to use a wide range of techniques, like grappling and submissions, which can end the fight without relying on punches.

MMA fighters thoughts

“Boxing is more dangerous, because you’re getting hit in the head all the time. In MMA, you have grappling, you have submissions, you have different ways to finish the fight.”

Rampage Jackson

“I think boxing is a lot more dangerous than MMA. In MMA, you can always submit and avoid getting hit in the head. In boxing, you can’t really avoid getting hit.”

Dan Henderson

Deaths

Although boxing has been around for much longer the data is undeniable. Since year 2000 there has been over 100 deaths in boxing vs 7 within MMA. I have only produced data since 2000 due to the fairly recent rise in popularity within MMA. I feel recording deaths prior to this would be an unfair comparison.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both boxing and MMA are dangerous sports that come with their own set of risks. However, many experts believe that boxing is more dangerous than MMA due to the high number of knockdowns and the bigger gloves used in the sport, the amount of punches to the brain and the lack of other options to end the fight when compared to MMA. It is important for both sports to have proper safety protocols in place and a trained medical staff to minimize the risk of injuries to the fighters.
